Am I alone or do you all have boxes or cords?

Posted September 9, 2009 / Jen

I just went to look for the cord that syncs up my phone to my computer. After a very thorough search, it eludes me. What I found, however, is startling.

Am I alone or do you all have boxes of cords? I have a lot (to say the least). Most look like they go to old phones, computers and stereo equipment, so why do I have them? I don’t seem to have anything that isn’t hooked up. I just know what all these cords doing in my life. If I were to dispose of them, where would they go? I’m would think they are toxic and need to be sent to some special place that deals with things like that. Why don’t they have an envelope to send them somewhere? My printer cartridges do. Anyway, I have to keep looking for the one cord I actually do need. Bye.

Tanya, I love the idea of labeling your cords from the beginning, and Jen, there are more and more of the endless cords these days. Try getting a clear shoebox or clear plastic container and putting all of the labeled cords in it. Then, when you need to use or charge something, pull the cord you need and put it back when you’re done. A few minutes up front will save you countless hours looking for cords, will keep peace with your kids gadgets and your own and will save you money not having to replace lost cords or toss those gadgets that are missing parts. Good luck!

I have a box of cords because we always need one for something, USB cords come in so many shapes and sizes you never know when you’ll buy something that doesn’t include the USB cord like my son’s PSP but I had a cord to fit it in my box, or if a friend forgets to bring a charger for their cell phone I usually have one handy that’ll fit.

Whenever I get anything with a cord – anything – I get a little strip of paper, write what the cord goes to in letters the width of the cord, and seal the label to the cord with clear tape. This is good later on when I am thinking “What do all these cords go to and why do I have them!?!?!?” I’ve thrown away more than one cord I turned out to need later…

It is also a great way to “navigate the cord jungle” that tends to form behind entertainment centers and computers (I label both ends of these cords in case I need to plug or unplug them from either end)…no more wondering which one is the “right one” and playing the “trace it back” game…

Good luck finding your cord, I’ve lost the cord to hubby’s black and decker led car working light thingy….hope I didn’t toss it … :)
