What Is Proper Play Date Etiquette?

What do you do if you don’t like the parents? What do you do if you don’t like the kids? Jen and Barb talk to Christie Mellor, author of The Three-Martini Playdate, about the ins and outs of play dates. Who knew it was so much like actually dating?

I think the snippets are fantastic and having already been through so many of the trials having a 14 and 10 year old, I could not agree more with Barb in that if the when entertaining someone else’s child they should be respectful of your rules as they are a guest in your house. I have rarely had to discipline anyone’s child but to address being kind to your friends as Jen mentioned…the bigger issue I would like to know, you are at a public playground watching your child but know the overall group of kids playing – a few of them are being unkind do you as the only present adult address the kids in question or do you go get the parent and say something…A really great show and site for young parenting. Good work Jen!

Great show! Looking forward to the one that applies to guiding parents of teenagers who continue to have “play dates” at their own homes and away!”

I just watched this episode. I agree with everything you had to say. How can you tell the other mom what the kids are suppose to do for two hours? (Never do more than 2 hours–and have them go swimming when the pool is heated…that takes up a lot of time). Jared is a typical boy… next time just have girls over! Very funny…we were all laughing… my kids and husband were watching it too!!

Get over yourself. We all have our own rules about each play date. Grass fed beef, organic chicken, raw millk for health,, proper mind food, ( no technololgy), who is to say. But, this is for my child, only. If it was only my rules for life on every play date, there would not be a play date, ever. And, if you spend most of your time with your child, the real world would not matter. Imposing your views on every child, and to be so blunt, is a lack of manners. The little white lie was invented in the victorian days as a sign of good breediing. We don’t have to agree but we let them down gently. Your blunt statment of my child doesn’t want a play date with your child is disgusting. Any one can say that. It takes good breeding to let them down gently.
