Wiping Butts and Noses Like the Rest of Us

Are celebrity moms really all that different from normal, suburban soccer moms like me?
Daydreaming about being a celebrity mom is fun…fantasizing about having a personal trainer, a stylist, a nanny, and maybe even a personal chef. But when it comes right down to it, kids want their moms at the end of the day. Celebrities are working moms with lots of perks, but when lullabies are to be sung and bedtime stories are to be read, celebrity moms are in the trenches of motherhood with the rest of us.
Being in Nashville, I thought it would be fun to speak to a country music superstar mom. Jo Dee Messina, mom of two, was kind enough to share her perspective on being a celebrity and being a mom. Messina says she only uses a nanny when she’s on the road. It sounds like she craves sleep more than the limelight!
“We take the kids with us and juggle them amongst the 3 of us on the road. They ride on a bus with me and my band/crew. The nanny takes them during meet and greet and show.”
When she’s not on a concert tour, Messina deals with the same dirty diapers and dirty laundry the rest of us contend with.
“When we are home, it’s pretty much NO SLEEP and days dealing with poop, spit up, formula stains, Laundry, laundry LAUNDRY. I’m up all night with my 6 month old who STILL does not sleep through the night and then start my day at 4 a.m. feeding baby, hitting the gym at 6 a.m., taking my son to school at 8:15 a.m., working with the baby by my side until 2:30 and then I head off to pick up our 3-year-old from Montessori school. It’s exhausting. I don’t even look in the mirror these days. The last thing I look like is a ‘celebrity.’”
Celebrity life definitely has its glamorous moments, but when celebrity moms are not on stage or on camera it sounds like they are just like the rest of us.
